Dolerus nitens (Common Sawfly)* |
|||
I believe that the images on this page show a Dolerus nitens (Common Sawfly). They are all of the same bug. I found this fly sitting on our concrete driveway In Logy Bay, Newfoundland, at about 1:00 PM local time (NDT). He was not moving much. He would walk a short distance then stop. After I finished the photos, I prodded him a bit to see if he would fly but he did not; he merely walked away. It appears that he ought to be able fly but he didn't. My guess is that he was a juvenile and not yet able to fly. This specimen was 9 mm in length (head to the rear tip of his wings), plus antennae. It was photographed on 2006-04-24, with a Canon 20D and EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM lens and a 1.4x tele-converter in natural sunlight. *Caveat: I am NOT an entomologist and, as with all my bug pictures, I am NOT positive about the accuracy of my taxonomic identification.
